Meet Barb: Living a Life Filled with Joy, Care, and Belonging

Barb's journey with TERI began more than four decades ago—and it's a story of stability, growth, and lifelong belonging.

Diagnosed after doctors discovered she had experienced oxygen deprivation at birth, Barb faced developmental challenges from an early age. As she grew older, caring for her became increasingly difficult for her aging parents. Her health declined, daily routines became more challenging, and her family worried about what the future would hold.

Then, at 19 years old, Barb joined TERI.

With structure, encouragement, and compassionate support, Barb began to flourish. She developed healthier habits, gained confidence, and found a community. More than 40 years later, she continues to thrive—now living in one of TERI's residential homes while participating in enriching day programs and activities she loves at TERI’s Center for the Arts.

Music has always brought Barb joy. She lights up at live performances, loves sharing hugs, and never misses her monthly visits home with her brother Steve, where they enjoy pizza, watch The Sound of Music, and continue to create memories in the home where they grew up.

Today, Barb's brother Steve can't imagine her anywhere else. He says, "TERI is amazing. We've never questioned the decision. Barb is engaged, she's happy, and she's exactly where she belongs."

Barb's story is a reminder that every person deserves not only quality care—but a place to belong for a lifetime.
